Enlightened Or Without Conscience?

My Buddhist teachers, that I love and acknowledge deeply, have taught me that one characteristic of the enlightened state, is that you are free of worry, or free of negative thoughts. They say that this is not the same as naivety, but you fully enjoy life, and at the same time, are aware of the suffering.

But the prince, from the Florentine writer Machiavelli, who ideally is scrupulous, is also enjoying life and free of worry! How, in the actual experience, in the first person, does having no conscience differs from the Buddhist enlightened state? Does it feel different?

One person in particular that comes to my mind is Imelda Marcos. I remember the television appearances she made, giggling and showing all her shoes. I looked like she had no worries in the world, was enjoying life and had no negative thoughts.
